University Avenue Corridor Study

The University Avenue Corridor Study was be undertaken using grant funding from the IDOT Illinois Tomorrow Corridor Planning Grant Program. The $180,000 grant was awarded to the City of Urbana in 2006, and was matched with $18,000 from the City of Urbana, City of Champaign, University of Illinois, the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, and the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission.

The goal of the study was to examine how safety and mobility could be improved in the corridor for all transportation modes through access management, intelligent transportation technologies, and other context sensitive solutions. In addition, the study determined how economic revitalization could occur through innovative streetscaping, infill and redevelopment opportunities, and façade improvements that focused on the pedestrian scale, drawing motorists off the roadway and into the community.
