The RPC will host a driver training this Saturday, September 28. Three sessions will be conducted by the Rural Transit Assistance Center between 8am and 4pm at the Champaign County Highway Department (1605 E. Main Street in Urbana).

Although the training is geared towards drivers/operators at public transit and human service agencies, anyone is free to attend. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) requires operators at the agencies to be trained in three areas to stay compliant and safe: passenger assistance, emergency procedures, and defensive driving. Safety, such as distracted driving, is currently one of the major concerns in transit nationwide.

The schedule includes these sessions:

Defensive Driving – 8-10am

Emergency Procedures – 10am to 12pm

Lunch – 12-1pm (not provided)

Passenger Assistance – 1-4pm

Drivers from the following 12 counties are eligible for the training:

  • Champaign
  • Clark
  • Coles
  • Cumberland
  • DeWitt
  • Douglas
  • Edgar
  • Macon
  • Moultrie
  • Piatt
  • Shelby
  • Vermillion

Drivers have until the end of the day on Thursday, September 26, to register. If you would like to register, please contact the RPC’s Kristen Gisondi at kgisondi@ccrpc.org or 217-531-8285.
