Although public utility companies in Illinois have shutoff moratoriums through March 31, 2021, the RPC is encouraging those in Champaign County with past-due power bills to make their appointments with the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) as soon as possible.
LIHEAP can lessen power bills by hundreds of dollars, making them more manageable so that people can avoid shutoffs in the Spring. A couple of examples outline this:
Household making no payments during the moratorium with an average monthly bill of $100*
Estimated bill in April 2021 without LIHEAP benefit: $1,400
Estimated bill in April 2021 with average LIHEAP benefit: $800
*If November 2020 bill was $1,000
Household making a $50 monthly payment during the moratorium with an average monthly bill of $100*
Estimated bill in April 2021 without LIHEAP benefit: $1,200
Estimated bill in April 2021 with average LIHEAP benefit: $600
*If November 2020 bill was $1,000
Champaign County residents can make their LIHEAP appointments online or by calling the RPC at 217-384-1226.
