National Federal Eviction Moratorium Can Help Champaign County Renters Stay in Their Homes

A stack of moving boxes on a table

A federal eviction moratorium took effect on September 4 and extends vital protections to millions of renters at risk of eviction for nonpayment of rent during the COVID-19 pandemic. This protection can help renters here in Champaign County stay in their homes.

If you are a qualified renter facing eviction, you need to provide a signed declaration to your landlord as soon as possible in order to be protected. This declaration can be found on page three of a National Eviction Moratorium FAQ found here.

While this moratorium provides essential relief for struggling renters, please be aware that it only postpones evictions, it does not prevent them. When the moratorium expires on December 31, 2020, back rent will be due. Learn more in this overview of the National Eviction Moratorium.
