New Youth Assessment Coordinator Hopes to Make a Positive Impact on Our Community and Brighten the Lives of the Youth We Serve

Champaign County’s new Youth Assessment Center (YAC) Coordinator is bringing passion and purpose to her role, determined to give the youth of our community an opportunity to thrive. Karmyn Doughty joined the RPC in March and works to design and implement high-quality programming based on research that is responsive to the needs of youth and families in Champaign County. Her duties include building and maintaining collaborative partnerships with Champaign County Court Services staff, law enforcement, community agencies, schools, funders, referral sources, and agency-procured contractors.

We asked Karmyn about what brought her to the RPC, how her background informs her approach, and what she hopes to accomplish in a role where she is responsible for the oversight, supervision, and overall coordination of the YAC.

Can you tell us a little about your background and what led you to this position at the Youth Assessment Center?

Karmyn Doughty: “In reflecting on my journey to the RPC, it is a convergence of passion and purpose that led me to this role. With a background in Sociology and Business Management, and currently pursuing my Master of Social Work with a concentration in Leadership and Social Change, I have always been drawn to community-driven initiatives. The RPC’s commitment as a community action agency resonated deeply with me, as I saw it as the perfect platform to channel my skills and drive for social impact. I firmly believe that it takes a village to raise a child, and the YAC embodies this culture wholeheartedly.”

What do you hope to accomplish in this position?

KD: “In this position, my overarching goal is to create meaningful change by implementing more programming for the youth and forging stronger connections within the community. I envision a network that extends beyond the confines of traditional boundaries, involving parents, schools, police, and local social agencies. By fostering these connections, we can create a robust village that nurtures and support every child’s growth and development.”

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the youth you work with?

KD: “I am aware of the challenges facing the youth we work with, particularly in envisioning and pursing their futures. Many lack guidance and resources needed to set and achieve meaningful goals. I am dedicated to collaborating with the team to bridge this gap, by providing not only support but also opportunities for them to thrive.”

What elements from your background can you bring to this position and turn into a positive with the youth you work with?

KD: “Drawing from my diverse background and experiences, I aim to bring a holistic approach to my work. My life experiences make me relatable to the youth, while my educational background equips me with the knowledge and skills to develop effective programs and strategies. I see every challenge as an opportunity to turn adversity into growth and resilience.”

Is there anything else you would like to add?

KD: “As I embark on this journey with the RPC, I am excited about the possibilities and committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of the youth we serve. Together, with the support of the community, we can build a brighter future for all.”

We welcome Karmyn to the RPC and look forward to seeing her contributions to the building of that village benefitting the youth of Champaign County.
