Champaign-Urbana Region Freight Plan
The Champaign-Urbana Region Freight Plan is a project funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation and developed by staff at CUUATS, the transportation program of CCRPC. The goal of the plan is to provide a comprehensive picture of regional freight movements, identify freight stakeholder needs, forecast future freight movement patterns, and propose recommendations that will enhance the movement of both people and goods while mitigating the negative impacts of freight on mobility, safety, environment, and quality of life in the Champaign-Urbana Metropolitan Planning Area (MPA).
CUUATS staff designed this freight planning process as an opportunity for both public and private freight stakeholders in the region to engage in conversations on freight system deficiencies and needs through the creation of a Freight Advisory Group and the implementation of additional engagement activities. The plan was carried out by CUUATS in cooperation with the Freight Advisory Group, which consisted of representatives from FHWA, IDOT, Champaign County, the Cities of Champaign and Urbana, the Village of Savoy, the University of Illinois, the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce, the Champaign County Economic Development Corporation, the Mid-West Truckers Association, and business representatives. Over the course of the project, several engagement activities were held for area businesses to gather additional input on freight activity patterns, existing freight system deficiencies, and future freight system needs. These collaborative efforts ensure that the plan’s goals are achievable and serve to connect partner agencies with tools to make informed decisions about future freight investments.
The CUUATS Technical and Policy Committees approved the Champaign-Urbana Region Freight Plan on October 16, 2019.
