Champaign-Urbana MPO 2020 Urban Area Boundary Changes Approved September 13, 2023

On December 29, 2022, the United States Census Bureau released the 2020 Census Qualifying Urban Areas and Final Criteria Clarifications. Based on the final definition of Urban areas, Champaign, IL, corresponding to the current Champaign-Urbana Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has provided a draft adjusted area boundary.

The new proposed boundaries were approved at the September 6th and September 13th meetings for comments and approval to be sent to IDOT. The new boundary will move to the south side of Monticello Road. This designation only changes the urban area boundary; it will not change the Metropolitan Planning Area designation, which will still include the Village of Mahomet and the Village of Tolono.
