Community Action Month Celebrates Community Action Being a Voice and Driving Force for Opportunity in America

May is Community Action Month, when we celebrate the establishment of the Community Action Network 59 years ago to help American families and communities overcome obstacles to poverty. More than 1,000 agencies across the country are working every day to create opportunities and transform the lives of their neighbors, making communities stronger and helping families across the United States thrive.

This year the RPC, a proud member of the Community Action Network and the National Community Action Partnership, commemorates 39 years of helping families throughout Champaign County. In May we will reflect on the positive impact the RPC has had. Last year alone, we served tens of thousands of people in Champaign County, while over 15 million people across the country were recipients of much-needed immediate services such as shelter and food, as well as more long-term solutions.

Community Action Agencies serve 99% of all American counties with life-changing services to help families achieve financial stability. All agencies are locally controlled and represented by the private, public, and low-income sectors of the community. We are proud of our community’s participation in the development and oversight of our programs, such as our Community Action Board. Their engagement helps us to be more effective in our approach by determining what Champaign County needs.

We hope all of Champaign County and the surrounding area recognize the important work done by the Community Action Network and continue to help the RPC provide the best services and programs to those in need within our community.
